Are you disabled? You may qualify to have your student loans discharged or cancelled.

Anonymous started this conversation

While it is rare, it is possible to have your student loans cancelled or discharged.

  • You die or become totally and permanently disabled.
  • Your school closed before you could complete your program.
  • For FFEL and Direct Stafford Loans only: Your school owes your lender a refund, forged your signature on a promissory note, or certified your loan even though you didn't have the ability to benefit from the coursework.
  • You work in certain designated public school service professions (including teaching in a low-income school).
  • You file for bankruptcy. (This cancellation is rare and occurs only if a bankruptcy court rules that repayment would cause undue hardship.)

I have an 8 year old daughter that is mentally ill.  I cannot work as I care for her constantly.  It is not me that is disa led, it is her, however, I am her caretaker.  I have 50,000 in college loans, 20,000 of that is interest.  not only can I not even use my degrees, I cant even work to pay off the loans & it is scaring me and affecting my credit.  Does anyone know what I can do?  Thanks so much for any advice.

They can be discharged for medical reasons if you are unable to work due to medical problems, but u have to file a papers requesting it be dismissed, then it goes thru a process and anything u paid in durin your disability will be gave back to you after a 3 year waiting period..

Thank you a ton, it is so nice to know that there are people who are willing to help others, and not profit from their misery and needs by selling them information. You are so very appreciated and Im very thankful to you for the time thought and energy you have put into this. Im 23 and have loans out I thougth of filing for bankruptcy due to those loans and over 20,000 in medical bills, but really don't want to especially if it would not wipe out the fed loans. Once again thank you a ton!!!
